Chapter 11

Looks like the time is almost here, G. By the time you see this in the morning, it might already have happened. I keep telling myself our plan is good, that we’ll have some surprise on our side, but I’m still worried. Of course I am.

Tell Haruhi I love her.

I know I’ve told you before, but thank you. For everything. And G… well, you know what’d I’d say.

I’ll pray that I can say it to you in person in a few long months.

IT WASN’T the first time that Max’s confident, flirtatious façade had failed him, but it was probably one of the most notable, especially for anyone watching.

Before he could get himself moving, or reacting at all, beyond fixation on the delightfully swaying sight before him, the hatch began to swing closed behind her.

Lurching forward, he caught the hatch before it could; pulling it back open and staggering through in what assuredly looked more like a stumble than a smooth recovery.

Goofy-looking or not, it did also tear his gaze away from her, and as he looked at the ground, he was able to remind himself why he was there, both what the LT had officially told him and what he’d guessed at.

More… the captain being here clinches it. Marigold waking me up in the middle of the night fills her with unholy glee. Her waking the captain up means something big is up.

Doesn’t take more than two brain cells to rub together to figure out the hammer has dropped, and they think the food was poisoned, and not accidentally.

I’ll be damned if I’ll let someone who tried to kill a bunch of us stay loose right before we head into a fight. Not when one of their primary goals will be retaking the bridge. Not when she’ll be there, right in the thick of it.

Blast it all, if they know what happened leading up to now, she’ll be of particular interest to them. She personally is responsible for all of it, ultimately.

I’m probably paranoid for thinking they know, but better to assume the worst and be pleasantly surprised than assume the best and be surprised the other way.

Straightening up, he studiously took in the rest of the room rather than let his gaze linger anywhere near the figure of the captain, who was standing toward the middle of the large room with her back to him.

Roomier in here than I would have thought, was his first thought. The heat is as I expected, though.

The long wall to his left was a mass storage space, with essentially no bare wall aside from the minimal amount needed for each cabinet, freezer, or storage room’s door to open without fouling its neighbors. To the right were the tables butting up against shuttered windows to allow delivery of the finished foods to the servers that worked the mess. Opposite him was a truly impressive mass of cooking apparatuses of every kind. Some were recognizable, if on a much larger scale than he was used to.
